A little about Matt
Starting out playing the drums in high school as many of us do, I quickly gained focus towards the drumset.
Several years later and many new musical friends and bands evolved where my naturally curious mind wandered into the technical realm of music and I began recording pretty much anything and everything I could including many local bands.
The passions combined quickly along with a natural entrepreneurial flair which I then began to form bold ideas of a musical based cafe/studio/store/press outlet.
A lot to process before the age of 20 to say the least!
I continued to drum everyday and helped form some great local original bands performing as often as possible and enrolled to study Business Management.
I soon found myself at the helm of the local music scenes best musical instrument store, Barratts Music, where I worked and managed the Drum + Percussion department for almost 5 years.
This completely opened up my mind, my heart and the greater musical industry around me to so much more and essentially provided me with an outlet to fulfill so many ideas and goals by uniting the drummers community together across all age groups and interests by organising regular drummers events, master classes, guest appearances, quarterly drummers zine along with being involved in annual music summer schools.
I studied the music retail industry intricately, took many trips abroad and had the pleasure of meeting so many amazing people from key industries and companies where I always strived to put my best foot forward and receiving a few industry awards along the way.
I then decided to further my music studies full time and completed my Diploma in Music Theory which quickly led me to employment with the Australian Childrens Music Foundation where I delivered thier program in a youth rehabilitation setting while I also briefly assisted with the Holy Oak foundation program “drumbeat” in a similar setting.
During this time I was also very fortunate enough to be performing and writing in a touring band where I was lucky enough to endorse Ddrum drums and work with some incredible international artists and perform to some great crowds and packed venues such as Falls Festival.
In between all of that I was also co-hosting weekly local radio slots, writing for local press and was appointed as Sponsorship Manager for Tas Music for 2 years which works with the community, schools & colleges for annual events.
Then I took some time to travel, regroup my thoughts and rest up.
Fast forward a little and I purchased a local cafe which had a great central city location and lots of space!
You guessed it! I began using the cafe space to host mini events after hours and on the weekends. EP launches, rock gigs, Record Appreciation club, Poetry Slams and even a Dr Who club!
Times were busy, but times were also changing after 2.5 years. At 29 I took the biggest leap of faith yet. I relocated to Queensland to be closer with family and for the first few years shifted my focus back to my roots of carpentry.
Carpentry is something I’ve done since leaving school in between all of the music and other things. I’m a qualified carpenter by trade with a swag of tickets to boot and specialise in large scale commercial construction. So this took over for a good few years and I was fortunate enough to be posted internationally for some big projects, but even amongst all that I still played drums several times a week and went to stacks of gigs and constantly found myself gravitating back towards my real passions in music and creativity….
Brisbane Drums was born.
Located in the south of Brisbane, I’ve set up a workshop where I endeavour to offer premium maintenance services to all drummers and percussionists in the Brisbane region. Over the past several years I’ve worked on a lot of projects for the drummers of Brisbane, from simple clean ups to full restorations and many things in between. My mind is always open to new ideas and I love helping people achieve what they want out of thier instruments, whether its a crazy custom idea or just some pure and elegant shine on that shell.
The mantra for Brisbane Drums is simple. What does Brisbane do? Brisbane Drums!
The combined passions, years of industry knowledge, immersive creativity and knowledge with drumset anatomy brings us here and is where I can offer your drums the best care and service possible.
I’m ready to work for you, your drums, your ideas and your creative goals as a drummer and want to thank you for taking the time to visit the site and join the journey.
